How do I choose a trustworthy jeweller in Surat for diamond jewellery?

A trustworthy jeweller shows you the proof before you pay: a grading report for every diamond, the matching laser inscription on the stone, a BIS HUID hallmark on the gold that you can check yourself, and an itemised invoice with the gold weight and the stones listed separately. They also explain exchange and buyback terms clearly and never rush you. If a jeweller is reluctant on any of these, keep looking.

Surat is the diamond city, so you have a lot of choice. These six checks work whichever showroom you visit.

1. Ask to see the grading report before you decide

Every solitaire should come with its own report from a recognised laboratory such as IGI, EGL or TGL. The report states the carat weight, colour, clarity and cut, and whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown. Read it before you agree a deal, not after. You can enter the report number on the laboratory’s own website and check that the details match.

For pieces with many small diamonds, such as earrings, pendants and necklace sets, the report or invoice should show the total diamond weight, the number of diamonds and their quality.

2. Match the report to the diamond itself

A report only helps if it belongs to the stone in front of you. Most graded solitaires carry the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle, the thin outer edge of the diamond. Ask the jeweller to show it to you under a 10x loupe or a microscope and check that it matches the report. At Vaishnavi Jewels every solitaire is laser-inscribed, and we show you the inscription at the counter.

3. Check the BIS HUID on the gold

Gold jewellery sold in India carries a BIS hallmark with a six-character HUID code. Open the BIS Care app, choose Verify HUID and type in the code. The app shows the purity and the type of article, which should match your invoice. A good jeweller will happily do this check with you.

4. Insist on an itemised invoice

The invoice should list the gold weight and karat separately from the diamond or stone details, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. This matters most for Polki and bridal sets, where the stones are a large part of the piece. If something on the bill is unclear, ask for it to be explained before you pay.

5. Get exchange, buyback and after-sales terms clearly

Ask what happens if you want to exchange or upgrade the piece later, and how resizing, polishing and repairs are handled. Clear answers now save confusion later. You can read how we handle this on our FAQ page.

6. Notice how you are treated

A jeweller you can trust lets you take your time, shows you several options within your budget and answers every question patiently. Pressure to decide on the spot is a reason to slow down.

Frequently asked questions

Which diamond certificates are accepted in India?

Reports from recognised laboratories such as IGI, GIA, EGL and TGL are widely used in India. Whatever the laboratory, you should be able to verify the report number on that laboratory’s own website.

Can a jeweller show me the laser inscription on my diamond?

Yes. The inscription is on the girdle and can be read under a 10x loupe or a microscope. In an open prong setting it usually stays visible; in a bezel setting it may be covered, so check it before the stone is set.

Is it safe to buy diamond jewellery on a video call?

It can be, if the jeweller shows you the piece live, shares the grading report details before you pay, and sends the report and invoice with an insured delivery.
