How can I tell if Polki jewellery is real?
20 October 2026
Real Polki jewellery is made with uncut diamonds, flat slices of diamond in their natural shape, set in gold and usually backed with foil. The surest way to know what you are buying is to have the stones described in writing on the invoice or a report, with the gold weight and karat shown separately from the stones. Kundan-style pieces look similar but usually use glass or other stones, so the paperwork is what tells them apart.
1. Get the stones described in writing
Ask the jeweller to write down exactly what the stones are and their total weight. Polki can be made with natural uncut diamonds, lab-grown uncut diamonds or moissanite, and each is a genuine option at a different budget. What matters is that the invoice tells you honestly which one you are getting. At Vaishnavi Jewels we make Polki in all three, and the bill always says which.
2. Look at the bill for the gold weight
A Polki set is part gold and part stone. An itemised invoice shows the gold weight and karat on one line and the stone details on another, so you can see what you are paying for. If the bill shows one combined weight, ask for the breakup.
3. Check the gold
Polki is traditionally set in high-karat gold so the stones can be closed in neatly. Ask what karat the piece is and how the gold purity is confirmed on your invoice.
4. Turn the piece over
Traditional Polki has a closed back, often finished with enamel (meenakari) or plain gold, which hides the foil behind each stone. The work should be neat and even, with no glue, rough edges or loose stones. Good craftsmanship on the back is usually a sign of care on the front.
5. Look closely at the stones
Uncut diamonds are flat and irregular in outline, with a soft glow rather than the sharp flashes of a faceted diamond. Glass tends to look very uniform and can show tiny bubbles under a loupe. If you are unsure, ask the jeweller to show you a stone under magnification.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Polki and Kundan?
Polki uses uncut diamonds. Kundan is a setting technique in which stones are set in gold foil, and Kundan-style pieces often use glass or other stones. Both can look similar, which is why the invoice should describe the stones.
Is Polki made with lab-grown diamonds real Polki?
Yes, as long as it is described honestly. Lab-grown uncut diamonds are real diamonds, and the invoice should say that the stones are lab-grown.
Can Polki jewellery be made to order?
Yes. Because we have our own manufacturing unit, we can make a Polki set to your design, size and budget.
