Lab-Grown Diamond Jewellery in Surat: How to Read an IGI Report

If you have been looking at lab-grown diamond jewellery in Surat, you have probably noticed that every serious piece comes with a laboratory report. That report is your most useful tool as a buyer, but only if you know what the lines on it mean. This guide walks you through an IGI lab-grown diamond report line by line, so that you can read one with confidence, whether you are sitting across the counter from us or viewing a piece on a video call from Ahmedabad, Vadodara or Mathura.

What an IGI lab-grown diamond report actually tells you

IGI (International Gemological Institute) issues separate reports for laboratory-grown diamonds. The first thing to look for is the wording itself: a lab-grown report clearly states that the stone is a laboratory-grown diamond. This is not fine print. It is printed prominently so that there is never any confusion about what you are buying.

Next comes the report number. Every IGI report has a unique number, and you can enter it on the IGI website to see the same details online. If the online record matches the paper in your hand, you know the report is genuine and belongs to that stone.

Most lab-grown diamonds graded by IGI are also laser-inscribed with the report number on the girdle, the thin outer edge of the stone. The inscription is microscopic and does not affect the look of the diamond, but a jeweller can show it to you under magnification. It is the simplest way to confirm that the diamond in your ring is the diamond described on the report.

Reading the 4Cs on the report

The main body of the report covers the four grading factors that most people have heard of.

Carat weight is the weight of the stone, stated to two decimal places. Remember that carat is weight, not size. Two stones of the same weight can look slightly different in diameter depending on how they are cut, which is why the report also lists measurements in millimetres.

Colour is graded on a scale from D to Z. D, E and F are considered colourless; G through J are near-colourless. In yellow or rose gold, a near-colourless stone often looks just as white to the eye as a D-colour stone, so the setting matters when you decide how far up the scale you want to go.

Clarity describes the presence of inclusions and blemishes, graded from Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF) through VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2 and the Included grades. Most inclusions in VS and higher grades are not visible without a loupe. The report usually includes a plotted diagram showing where any inclusions sit.

Cut is graded for round brilliant diamonds on a scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. Cut governs how well the diamond returns light, and for many buyers it is the grade that makes the biggest difference to how the stone looks in daily wear.

The lines people skip, and why they matter

Below the 4Cs you will find a few more entries that are worth a look.

Polish and symmetry are graded on the same Excellent-to-Poor scale as cut. They describe how smoothly the facets are finished and how evenly they are aligned.

Fluorescence notes whether the stone glows under ultraviolet light and how strongly. It is a characteristic, not a flaw, and in most cases it has no visible effect in normal lighting.

Comments is where the lab records anything else relevant to the stone. Read this section carefully rather than skipping it.

Shape and cutting style confirms whether the stone is a round brilliant, oval, cushion, emerald cut or another shape. This is useful when you are comparing a report to a piece of jewellery, because you can immediately check that the shape matches.

Checking the gold along with the diamond

A diamond report tells you about the stone, not the metal it sits in. For the gold, look for the BIS hallmark. Since 2021, hallmarked gold jewellery in India carries a six-character alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code alongside the BIS logo and the purity mark, for example 18K750 or 22K916. You can verify the HUID through the BIS Care app to confirm the purity of the piece. All gold used in our jewellery is BIS HUID hallmarked.

Can I verify an IGI report myself?

Yes. Enter the report number on the IGI website and the online record will show the same grading details as the printed report. Where the stone is laser-inscribed, a jeweller can also show you the inscribed number on the girdle under magnification so that you can match it to the report.

Does every lab-grown piece come with a certificate?

Diamond certificates from recognised labs such as IGI, TGL and EGL accompany our pieces where applicable. Very small stones set in clusters or as accents are often not individually graded, which is normal industry practice. Ask us before you buy and we will tell you exactly which stones in a piece are certified.

Do you also make natural diamond jewellery?
