Maang Tikka, Passa or Nothing With a Bridal Veil?
2 November 2026
With a bridal veil or a head dupatta, you do not have to give up forehead jewellery. A slim maang tikka worn in the centre parting, or a passa on one side, usually works best, because both sit under or beside the drape without lifting it. Choose earrings that frame the face under the veil, and try the whole look with your actual dupatta before the wedding day.
How does a veil change where the tikka sits?
When a dupatta or veil is draped over the head, it rests on the hair just behind the hairline. A maang tikka hangs from the parting down to the forehead, so the two meet at the top of the head. What matters is:
- The hook or chain of the tikka sits under the veil, where it is hidden and secure.
- The pendant of the tikka hangs below the edge of the veil, where it is seen.
- The veil’s edge should not push the tikka sideways or flip it over.
A slim tikka with a fine chain and a medium pendant sits most comfortably. A very broad tikka or a heavy pendant can push the veil up or tilt with every movement.
When does a passa work better?
A passa, worn on one side of the head, is a good choice when:
- Your hair is styled with a side parting.
- The veil is pinned further back, leaving one side of the hairline open.
- You want a modern or Mughal-inspired look that photographs well from the side.
Place the passa on the side that faces the camera most often during the rituals, and keep the other side simple. If you wear a passa, a small centre tikka is optional; wearing a large tikka and a large passa together under a heavy veil can feel crowded.
When is it better to wear nothing on the forehead?
Some brides prefer a clear forehead, and that can look lovely too. Consider skipping forehead jewellery when:
- The veil itself is heavily embroidered or edged with a thick border along the face.
- Your necklace and earrings are already large and you want the face to stay calm.
- You are wearing a matha patti-style hairpiece built into the hairstyle.
In this case, let statement earrings and the necklace carry the look.
How should earrings balance a veil and tikka?
The veil frames the face from above, so earrings frame it from the sides. A simple guide:
- Slim tikka plus veil: choose chandbalis or long drops; they fill the space between the veil and the shoulders.
- Passa plus veil: choose slightly shorter earrings on the passa side so the two do not clash.
- No forehead jewellery: choose your largest earrings here.
- Heavy earrings: use ear chains or supports (sahare) so the earlobes stay comfortable through long functions.
Keep the stones of the tikka, passa and earrings the same, for example all Polki with pearls, or all diamonds, so the face looks like one complete picture.
What should I check before the wedding day?
- Try it with the real dupatta. The fabric weight changes everything; a light net veil and a heavy velvet dupatta sit very differently.
- Check the clasp and hook. The tikka should be pinned firmly to the hair so it stays centred through the pheras.
- Check the weight. A comfortable piece is one you forget you are wearing after an hour.
- Check the papers. Our pieces come with a jewellery grading report from IGI, EGL or TGL for the diamonds, and all our gold is BIS HUID hallmarked, which you can check in the BIS Care app.
Because we make jewellery in our own manufacturing unit, we can adjust a tikka’s chain length, change a hook, or make a lighter passa to match your necklace. Custom bridal pieces usually take 2 to 4 weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a maang tikka with a bridal veil?
Yes. A slim tikka with a fine chain sits comfortably under a veil, with the pendant showing below the edge. Pin it firmly to the parting so it stays centred.
Which maang tikka suits my face shape?
A single drop tikka suits most faces and a centre parting; a matha patti suits a broader forehead and a low bun. Read more in our FAQ.
Should I wear a passa and a maang tikka together?
You can, but under a heavy veil it can feel crowded. With a passa, a small tikka or none at all usually looks cleaner.
