What should I ask a jeweller before buying a solitaire ring?
20 October 2026
Before you buy a solitaire ring, ask to see the grading report, ask for the laser-inscribed report number to be shown on the diamond, confirm whether the stone is natural or lab-grown as stated on the report, and check the gold karat and BIS HUID on the band. Then ask about resizing, exchange and buyback. A good jeweller answers all of these before you pay.
1. Which laboratory graded this diamond, and may I see the report?
Every solitaire should have its own report from a recognised laboratory such as IGI, EGL or TGL. You can check the report number on the laboratory’s website.
2. Can you show me the inscription on the stone?
The report number is laser-inscribed on the girdle, the thin outer edge of the diamond. Ask to see it under a loupe or microscope and match it to the report. Every Vaishnavi solitaire is inscribed.
3. Is this diamond natural or lab-grown?
The report states it clearly. Both are real diamonds; what matters is that you know which one you are buying and that the paperwork says so.
4. How do the cut, colour and clarity affect the look?
Carat is weight, not size, and the cut decides how much light comes back to your eye. Many diamonds in the VS and SI1 clarity range look clean to the naked eye. Ask the jeweller to show you two or three stones side by side so you can see the difference yourself.
5. Which setting suits my hand and lifestyle?
A four- or six-prong setting shows more of the diamond; a bezel protects it better for everyday wear. Ask whether the setting can be changed later.
6. What is the gold, and is it hallmarked?
Ask the karat of the band and check its BIS HUID in the BIS Care app.
7. What are the resizing, exchange and buyback terms?
Ring sizes change over the years, so ask how resizing works and how exchange or an upgrade is handled. Our terms are on our FAQ page.
