How to Clean and Store Polki and Kundan Jewellery at Home
26 October 2026
To clean Polki and Kundan jewellery at home, wipe each piece gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, keep it away from water, perfume, hairspray and creams, and store it separately in a soft pouch or lined box. Do not soak it, scrub it or use an ultrasonic cleaner, because the stones are often backed with foil and set in ways that water and harsh cleaning can damage. For a deeper clean, bring the piece to a jeweller.
Why do Polki and Kundan need gentle care?
Polki uses uncut diamonds, and Kundan-style setting uses fine gold to hold stones in place. In many traditional pieces, a thin foil sits behind each stone to reflect light through it, and the back of the piece may carry enamel work. Some designs also include pearls or coloured stones.
Water and chemicals can get behind the stones, dull the foil or loosen the setting over time. Pearls are especially sensitive to perfume and creams. Gentle, dry care keeps the piece looking as it did on your wedding day.
How should I clean Polki jewellery after wearing it?
- Let it rest. Remove the jewellery after your make-up, perfume and hairspray have settled, ideally last thing before changing.
- Wipe it dry. Use a soft, lint-free cotton or microfibre cloth to remove skin oil and make-up. Wipe gently in one direction.
- Clean the back carefully. Use a soft, dry make-up brush to remove dust from the back and between stones.
- Check the pearls. If the piece has pearl strands or drops, wipe them separately with a soft cloth.
- Air it. Leave it on a clean cloth for a short while before storing, so any moisture from the skin dries.
Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, soap solutions, steam and ultrasonic machines.
How should I store Polki and Kundan jewellery?
- One piece, one pouch. Store each piece separately in a soft cloth pouch or a lined box so stones do not scratch each other.
- Keep necklaces flat. Lay heavy necklaces flat rather than hanging them, so the setting is not strained.
- Protect from humidity. Keep boxes in a dry cupboard. A silica gel sachet in the storage box helps during the monsoon.
- Separate pearls. Pearls need a little air; avoid sealing them in plastic for long periods.
- Keep the original box. It is designed to hold the piece safely.
What should I avoid while wearing Polki jewellery?
- Spraying perfume directly on or near the jewellery.
- Applying creams or lotion just before putting it on.
- Bathing, swimming or washing hands with it on.
- Sleeping in heavy pieces.
The simple rule is “last on, first off”: put jewellery on after make-up and perfume, and take it off before anything else.
When should I take it to a jeweller?
Bring your Polki or Kundan pieces to a jeweller if you notice:
- A stone that moves or rattles.
- A dull patch behind a stone that does not wipe away.
- A bent hook, loose clasp or broken thread on pearl strands.
- Heavy build-up from regular wear.
We make Polki jewellery in our own manufacturing unit, so we can check settings, clasps and pearl threads, and clean heavy sets professionally. Bring your pieces to our showroom and we will look at them with you. See our Polki jewellery page and our guide on how to tell if Polki jewellery is real.
Does diamond jewellery need the same care?
Diamond jewellery in claw or prong settings is sturdier, but it still benefits from regular wiping, separate storage and periodic checks of the prongs. Our FAQ covers daily-wear care for diamond rings.
Every piece we sell comes with a jewellery grading report from IGI, EGL or TGL and a BIS HUID hallmark on the gold, which you can check in the BIS Care app. Keep these papers safely with the jewellery.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if Polki jewellery is real?
Ask what stones are used, check the gold purity and the BIS HUID, look at the finish on the back, and ask for a jewellery grading report. A good jeweller explains all of this openly.
How do I know if the diamond in my ring is loose?
Gently tap the ring near your ear and listen for a rattle, and look for gaps under the prongs. If unsure, have it checked at a jeweller.
Can I wear my diamond ring every day?
Yes, a well-set diamond ring can be worn daily. Take it off for the gym, heavy housework and chemicals, and get the prongs checked once or twice a year.
